“I think it – there’s a romantic notion that somehow if Leviathan comes to take everything you have, you’re still going to have a gun with which to protect yourself,” Stephens said. “I’d like, I’d like conservatives to point to a single instance – what is it, the Whiskey Rebellion, was it the Brinks robbery, other acts of political violence in the United States, where conservatives who are saying they used their guns to protect their liberties? You won’t find a single instance of that.”

Was New Year night chosen to have Sirius highest at midnight?

When looking at the dates of the brightest stars, we cannot overlook the fact that the brightest star Sirius is highest on the Midnight of January 1st.

The question is was that the reason why January 1st was chosen on that date?

This question invites our thinking on ancient astronomy and time keeping.

The brightest stars and their dates are given in the following two figures.

Yes, Another New Release From Ruger…

I’m still partial to classic bolt actions such as the M77, or Over-Under 12 gauge shotguns with Classic lines. The new stuff is cost effective, but maybe because I was weaned on walnut and blue steel, I still love the classics.

Welcome To The Resistance!

Ruger released yet another cool rifle as part of their pre-SHOT Show blitz; the Ruger Precision Rimfire (link):

Ruger Precision Rimfire

This is a pretty cool bolt action .22 LR that feeds from 10/22 magazines and features an 18 inch cold hammer forged barrel and an action that has a nearly identical throw to the centerfire big brother.

Although I think this one is interesting thankfully it is not a “have to have it” like the PC Carbine.

I heard from a friend in the industry that Ruger has more new releases in the pipeline so we could be posting a lot more Ruger announcements here.

God bless!

The 5 Worst Fake Gun Stories of 2017

Freedom Is Just Another Word...

Because the Trump administration and our Republican-controlled Congress is pro-Second Amendment, we’ve seen plenty of scare tactics in the news this year regarding guns.

It seems the mainstream media does whatever it can to make Americans frightened at the very mention of gun rights.

Much of the reporting this year has been completely fake. As the year comes to a close, let’s take a look back at five of the worst fake stories on guns from 2017.

When do we Talk About Politics and Guns?

SlowFacts

We have our priorities. First, we have to keep guns away from children if we have guns in our home. Next, the adults with a gun in their home need to know how to handle firearms safely, and hopefully, effectively. What should come next? Talking about politics and guns seems to slip off our priority list, and that carries a danger of its own. Carrying a firearm for your safety is a very rational choice, but..there is a “but.” Unless you’re careful, you are also at risk of malicious prosecution for infringing one of our many gun laws. When is it time to talk about gun politics with new students and existing firearms owners?

This topic came to mind when politics leaked over into the gun discussion with a group of black friends. They wanted to keep our discussion of firearms separate from a larger discussion of partisan politics. I…

Deer Season 2017: Part 1

GalHunterMidlife

In my effort to get as much time in hunting as possible, while I prepared for my Christmas travels, I neglected my writing. Which is why I find myself now, 1200 miles from home, writing on my laptop in front of a pit-fire at my parents’ home.

This year’s deer season has been unusual, challenging, exciting, and surprising. As a bow hunter, crossbow due to my disabilities, and a rifle hunter; I embrace the opening of deer season-archery in early September, fairly confident that between September and the end of December I should be able to harvest at least one deer. My concern this year was that I could have a repeat of last year; which had me out hunting every possible day off, in every weather climate, with no harvest at all. (Thankfully the great patriots at Veterans 4 Veterans Outdoor Adventures donated venison to me last year). It…

Blog | GunMag Warehouse – The New Springfield Armory TRP 10mm Operator

I owned a Delta Elite, when they first came out. Pistol needed work beyond factory, which had cheapened up things. I believe the pistol was about maximum and actually thought a 4.5 inch barrel could have improved things. Springfield has gone with a 6.0 inch barrel, and reduces options for street carry. I will stick with a 1911A1 Series-70. The reason why I bought a 10mm is because I was looking for .45 acp+P loaded slightly hotter. All these years later, it is not a major issue. Why? Because, “ONLY THE HITS COUNT.”

Dried sweet fruits as energy food

Dried sweet fruits as energy food.

In general, any sweet fruit can be dried by the Sun and kept as an emergency energy food supply. Dried sweet fruits may also be used as components offood for survival (similarly to chocolate bars).

Many sweet fruits can be dried and kept in this way. They include bananas, longans, jack fruits, apricots, persimons, plumes.

Muslim Terrorist Caught Before His Planned Christmas Day Attack in San Francisco…

Trigger Reset

Officials have stopped a man who reportedly stated that “Christmas was the perfect day” for a terror attack in San Francisco and “did not need an escape plan because he was ready to die.”

MuzzieLastWillandTestament.JPG
We’ve learned the FBI has arrested a man by the name of Everitt Aaron Jameson from Modesto.

They say he wanted to target Pier 39.

According to FBI documents, Jameson picked out that location because he “had been there before and knew it was a heavily crowded area.” He added that it would be easy to “funnel” people into an area where he could inflict casualties.

Jameson reportedly said he was inspired by the New York terror attack on Oct. 31, when a Muslim drove into a crowd and killed eight people, and the deadly 2015 Muslim terror attack on a Christmas party in San Bernardino.

The documents also say Jameson was…

Sierra Bullets 300 AAC Blackout Load Data

Sierra Bullets

Test Specifications/Components

Firearm Used: Universal Receiver

Barrel Length: 16″

Twist: 1-8’’

Case: Hornady

Trim-to Length: 1.363″

Primer: Winchester WSR

Remarks:

The 300 AAC Blackout (300 BLK, or 7.62x35mm) was created by Advanced Armament Corp. and Remington in order to provide the military with a way to shoot .30 caliber bullets from the M4 platform with only a barrel change. It has since become popular for a wide range of uses including hunting and home defense.

The cartridge shares case-head dimensions and body taper with the .223 Remington. Not only does this allow for compatibility with existing magazines and bolts, but it allows reloaders to form their own brass from cut-down 5.56mm or .223 cases – ensuring brass supply even in the event of a shortage of factory brass.

The 300 AAC Blackout is a similar concept to previous wildcats, such as the 30-221 and 300 Fireball, as well as…

#1615 90 gr HPBT GameKing

Sierra Bullets

Written by Ballistic Technician Philip Mahin

It was my understanding that Sierra’s 90gr HPBT GameKing #1615 was going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread in a 257 Roberts, and boy was that a correct statement!

I was finally able to purchase a limited run Ruger 77 Hawkeye chambered in the 257 Roberts cartridge. The factory walnut stock is shaped to fit me like a glove so it points easy and the trigger is clean. This makes it an easy shooter and is more than likely the reason it has shown me the accuracy it has. The 4-12×40 scope is mounted as low as it can be without touching the barrel and has a simple duplex reticle, just like I like a hunting gun to have.

It wasn’t going to be long before the 2017 deer season would be upon me so I had to work fast and find…

The .22 Carbine For Home Defense?

Welcome To The Resistance!

Matt over at the Jerking The Trigger blog recently posted an article on the use of a .22 LR carbine (like the Ruger 10/22) as a home defense tool (link). In the article he points out several reasons why it might not be a bad choice. Those included:

-The low cost of acquisition and ammo

-Low recoil and ease of use, especially for non-gun folks and younger family members

To be honest, when we were first married Wonderful Wife and I did not have a lot. We didn’t really worry about being robbed because we were the poorest folks in the neighborhood. Just about everything in our home was a hand me down or freebie of some sort or another. We had so little to worry about losing in those days we didn’t even lock the door when we left the house about half the time.

We like to say that gun owners are responsible people. We say it, but the anti-gun zealots don’t acknowledge it. They point to the anecdotal data of some moron doing something stupid, or they point to violent crime rates as evidence that we’re somehow all unhinged and just waiting to snap.

However, a study from Oregon State University found that gun owners really internalize the responsibility of handgun ownership.

In a study published today, Oregon State University researchers have identified ways that handgun owners attempt to mitigate those risks, including developing routines with their firearms, practicing target shooting and self-defense simulations and mentally rehearsing self-defense scenarios. The researchers conclude that while these efforts do decrease some risk, they can never fully prepare someone for the risks posed in an actual self-defense situation.

“In some ways, in the U.S., handguns for self-defense are like cars. They are consumer products that present…

Inside America’s Growing Bulletproof Clothing Industry

Gun Culture 2.0

After a long series of heavy posts on gun training with Suarez International, how about something a bit on the lighter side? At least relatively speaking.

I previously posted in full my response to a writer’s request for comments on the rise of bulletproof fashion.

I am happy to say that the article is now published on Racked.com and the author drew on my comments liberally and fairly.

Screen cap of https://www.racked.com/2017/12/14/16738162/bulletproof-clothing

I had fun with this particular media inquiry because it allowed me to talk about some serious issues in the context of a story about something that is relatively frivolous as concerns most armed citizens.

Until someone comes up with a way to sell a bulletproof or bullet-resistant suit for $400 and it is no longer frivolous. For the right price, I would buy one. Would you?

Why would anyone trust Feinstein and Schumer to support their gun rights?

Freedom Is Just Another Word...

Urge Your Senators not to be Fooled by Fraudulent Claims

I can’t recall anything like this in recent memory.

Some pro-gun supporters are clamoring for legislation that has the “who’s who” of the anti-gun Democrat movement cosponsoring it.

I’m talking about S. 2135, the anti-gun Fix NICS bill, where Democrat Senators Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Schumer and Chris Murphy have teamed up with Republican John Cornyn of Texas.

The sponsors of the Cornyn-Schumer-Feinstein bill (S. 2135) are appealing to pro-gun supporters by fraudulently holding out section 2(2) of their gun control bill as some big achievement. They claim it will require records corrections within 60 days for people erroneously denied under the Brady Law.

But guess what?  The Brady Law itself, at Statutes at Large subsections (f) and (g), already requires the FBI to give a reason for a denial in five business days, and provides that “the Attorney…

From Mozambique to Istanbul to Sutherland Springs

Gun Culture 2.0

Earlier this year, the colorful Sheriff Jim Wilson published a colorful history of the famous Mozambique drill on the website of Shooting Illustrated.

From 1964 to about 1974, Mozambique was going through a serious difference of opinion called the Mozambican War of Independence. Mike Rousseau was one of the mercenaries hired to fight in that war. In the course of the conflict, Rousseau was engaged in the fighting at the airport in the city of Lourenco Marques (since renamed Maputo). During that scrap, Rousseau, armed only with a Browning Hi Power, rounded the corner of a building and came face to face with an enemy combatant armed with an AK-47.

Rousseau made a quick combat presentation with his pistol and planted two bullets in the area of his opponent’s breastbone. In a fighter’s worst nightmare, the soldier not only stayed on his feet, he managed to hang onto his rifle…

When You Are Called On To Change History: Counter-Terrorist Proactive Shooting with Gabe Suarez

Duty, as cited in Psalm 31, when you are placed into harm’s way, and have faith to muster strength to do what must be done. The reality of it all, is that as time goes by in America, You really could be, Called, upon.

Gun Culture 2.0

The final part of Suarez International’s Pistol Gunfighting School completes the paradigm shift from Tactical Clue 1997 – the old Modern Technique of the (Defensive) Pistol – to Tactical Clue 2017 – the New Modern Technique of the (Offensive) Pistol.

As noted in my last post, rather than imagining the typical counter-ambush defensive scenario, Suarez is suggesting the students prepare themselves mentally and physically for a counter-terrorist offensive scenario.

Suarez International Pistol Gunfighting School. Photo by David Yamane

The same principles of gunhandling and marksmanship that Suarez taught on day 1 still apply, but now the skills employed shift from reactive point shooting to proactive precision shooting. In a proactive event, the shooter needs a good sight picture and index, more focus on breathing, and a better trigger press and follow through.

The level of precision required is much finer in the proactive event than in the reactive…

Well I don’t need much arm twisting to go to the woods. Off I went after some bushy tails and supplied the party with some of the forest groceries.  The New Jersey small game season allows a licensed hunter to take 5 squirrels per day.

As a licensed hunter, one must pass a hunter education class and purchase a yearly license.  I choose to pay $72.50 for the all-around sportsman which includes Resident Firearm Hunting, Bow & Arrow Hunting & Fishing Licenses.  Approximately $27.50 accounts for the resident firearm tag.  These license fees pay salaries of NJ Fish & Wildlife employees and help to preserve wildlife management areas and other open space for public access.  In addition Pittman-Robertson Act aka Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act takes an…

Reactive Shooting and Movement in Gabe Suarez’s New Modern Technique

Gun Culture 2.0

In previous posts, I have suggested that Gabe Suarez’s Pistol Gunfighting School draws on and updates Col. Jeff Cooper’s Modern Technique of the Pistol. Suarez’s New Modern Technique (my term, not his) is indebted to Cooper’s Combat Triad (mindset, gunhandling, marksmanship) and the combat mindset part of the triad (mental conditioning for combat) in particular.

Here I want to press ahead with my analysis of Suarez’s Pistol Gunfighting School by highlighting Suarez’s biggest departure from the old Modern Technique: the distinction between reactive and proactive shooting. This distinction has implications for both the why and how of shooting.

Gabe Suarez shooting demonstration. Photo by David Yamane

In terms of “why,” the distinction between reactive and proactive shooting parallel the previously discussed difference between 1997 Tactical Clue and 2017 Tactical Clue. Reactive shooting addresses the problem of the “thug in the parking lot with a screwdriver,” while proactive shooting…

Marksmanship and Gunhandling in Gabe Suarez’s New Modern Technique

Gun Culture 2.0

Indebted as he is to Col. Jeff Cooper, Gunsite, and the Modern Technique of the Pistol, it is not surprising that much of what Gabe Suarez teaches in his Pistol Gunfighting School is quite conventional.

As with so many gun training courses, the class begins with a safety briefing, a medical briefing, and an administrative briefing.

As the first day goes on, Suarez covers a number of many elements of the Modern Technique, often with his own particular spin.

Stance Position

Suarez advocates a shooting position rather than a stance, which he thinks connotes “stationary.”

“Get in position like you’re going to get in a fistfight,” he suggests. “Your body will take care of it. You want to shoot Weaver, go ahead. It doesn’t matter. Everyone…

20 of the Most Ridiculous Anti-Gun Moments of 2017

Freedom Is Just Another Word...

As proof, here are some of the most outrageous things anti-gunners (including gun control leaders, politicians, and reputable reporters) have slung our way this year. Be prepared to laugh, roll your eyes, shake your head, and maybe even shed a tear or two. Just remember: each infuriating comment is one more reason why Second Amendment advocates must keep up the good fight in promoting facts and sound education.

Hosted by my friends Chad( Forged in Fire) and Maria. A link to their WordPress account below. Doing just a fine job promoting the craft as well as setting the stage for their future farm. I have great respect for them as my wife and I believed in farming and ranching as well. This post is going out to nearly 5000 people. We welcome comments and questions!

Today was the very first class for our blacksmithing school. I had two students, Anthony, and Shane. They were great students and did very well. We spent a good bit of time discussing shop safety and tools selection. Especially after hearing about the knucklehead from upstate New York who burned down half a town by […]First day of school..

Jeff Cooper 2.0: Gabe Suarez and the New Modern Technique of the Pistol

Gun Culture 2.0

A commenter on my Facebook page partial to Jeff Cooper and the Modern Technique was critical of what he called the Post-Modern Technique of the Pistol – contemporary teaching that departs from the essentials taught in Version 1.0.

My experience is not as substantial as many others’, but it seems to me based on my observations so far that what we see in the mainstream of the gun training industry is not a leaving behind of the Modern Technique (post-modernism) but an updating of the Modern Technique (neo-modernism).

This makes sense because so much of the expanding tree of gun trainers traces its roots back to Col. Jeff Cooper. Many are either students of Cooper (direct or indirect), or students of Cooper’s students (direct or indirect). At least on the national level.

Gabriel (Gabe) Suarez is a case in point. As Cooper is revered by most and Suarez reviled by…

Gun profits dropping as fear-motivated buying decreases

Jim Campbell's

One thing that may  well have been overlooked in this piece is that those of us who wanted guns did so when Obama was in office.

All he did was make the cost of weapons and ammunition rise.

Like guns or not there are two times extra measures are required, when one needs a parachute or they find them selves in a situation called a shoot or be killed situation.

President Trump Claims to be the Most Pro-Gun President in Modern Times,

With both houses of Congress under Republican control, pro-gun groups are now focused on achieving their major goal: the passage so-called “concealed carry reciprocity” laws.

As things stand, US states have different rules about who can carry a concealed weapon in public, and what they need to do to get permission. But the new laws, if passed by Congress and signed off by President Trump, would mean an…

Even PolitiFact Sees Anti-Reciprocity Hysteria As Nonsense

Freedom Is Just Another Word...

Most “fact checker” sites tend to have a bit of a liberal bias. Snopes is notoriously bad about finding any nook and cranny possible to defend liberal politicians or attack conservative ones. PolitiFact, however, tends to be a bit better than most.

But that’s a low bar, to be sure.

However, they took aim at a bit of hysteria surrounding national reciprocity, and it doesn’t work out well for the anti-gun zealots.

Respectful Irreverence by Rob Pincus

Gun Culture 2.0

As I transition from my recent series of posts on Col. Jeff Cooper, Gunsite, and the Modern Technique of the Pistol to a forthcoming series of posts on Gabe Suarez and his Pistol Gunfighting School, it seems an appropriate time to post an essay by Rob Pincus called “Respectful Irreverence.”

The article first appeared on the Breach, Bang, Clear blog in September 2008, but was lost in a tech related transition over there. The version below has also been reprinted as Appendix A in Grant Cunningham’s 2013 book, Defensive Revolver Fundamentals.

I appreciate Rob Pincus allowing me to re-post the essay here. Even before meeting him, I found his understanding of teaching as a way of cultivating humanity compelling, and there are echoes of that perspective in this essay. During my long weekend of observation of his Combat Focus Shooting Instructors Conference I found that he adheres to the…

Moose River Plains Hot Tenting & Buck Tracking

Nature Into Action

This trip my friend Kenny joined me for an exploration of the Moose River Plains Wild Forest and some tracking of Adirondack Bucks. Very low deer density, minimal tracks to follow and no shots fired but one of the most beautiful natural areas that I’ve been able to experience.  I’ve been fascinated by the history of the area, old logging/hunting camps and reading and listening to the stories of great Adirondack hunters like Hal Blood, Joe Dinitto and the Benoits. The Robert Elinskas books, Benoit family videos and Big Buck Registry Podcast sure has given me something to think about and skills to develop.

The Combat Triad: How Gunsite Has Changed Its Mind(set)

Gun Culture 2.0

I’ve been taking a pretty nitty-gritty look at the Modern Technique of the Pistol in my last few posts (“blessing and curse,”“simply and briefly,” and “updating”). In this post I want to continue with my thoughts on the Gunsite 250 Defensive Pistol Course and the Modern Technique, but take a step back to look at the big picture as concerns the Combat Triad.

Of the three parts of the Combat Triad, the Gunsite 250 course I observed emphasized gunhandling and marksmanship far more than mindset. For the most part, the combat mindset part of the triad was restricted to a 45 minute lecture on Wednesday afternoon by Rangemaster Bill Halvorsen. I understand that this is the traditional day and time for “the mindset lecture”; my point more concerns the confinement of the combat mindset to that classroom session.

In the original codification, at least in the…

Liberating good guys with guns

Fifty States = Fifty sets of different laws.
Constitutional Carry & Stand Your Ground, unified as one law, is Fifty States = One set of laws.
Keep It Simple.

Freedom Is Just Another Word...

The right to self-defense is fundamental to a free people. So says the Second Amendment, and Americans hearing it loud and clear are the proud owners of guns enough to arm nearly every man, woman and child. When ne’er-do-wells turn their weapons against the innocent, it’s responsibly armed citizens who must provide defense in the absence of the police. That’s why rules that force concealed carry permit holders to leave their firearms at home when they travel are foolish rules. Congress must finish the job of empowering the good and responsible man and woman with a gun.

House to Vote Today on Gun Bill

GOA = NO COMPROMISE. “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.”

Freedom Is Just Another Word...

GOA will not advocate for a bill enforcing gun control
Yesterday, the House Rules Committee voted to combine the reciprocity and anti-gun “Fix NICS” bills (H.R. 38 and H.R. 4477).

The combined bill now goes to the House floor, with votes scheduled for today.

Because of the united push from gun control groups, the NRA and many House Republicans, the “Fix NICS” portion has an OVERWHELMING majority in the House.

Not only that, a stand-alone “Fix NICS” bill has an OVERWHELMING majority in the Senate. This is further evidenced by the fact that Republican Senate leaders Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn — along with Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Chris Murphy — are all cosponsors and strongly supporting Fix NICS (S. 2135).

So the result of passing the NICS bill apart from reciprocity would be for gun control to be fast-tracked to President Trump’s desk, while reciprocity died under a…

Range Report: Annual Hunting Trip

Welcome To The Resistance!

Last weekend was our annual “guys weekend” hunting trip to North Texas and I wanted to share a few thoughts and observations…

The Good

The Ruger American Predator in .308 is a great rifle (for me).

The rifle is nice an light. Unlike some other rifles I have used, carrying it through the woods, mud and brush all day on was no problem. No wrist or shoulder pain like I have had carrying some other rifles. The “Claw” sling from Quake did a great job keeping the rifle in place so I didn’t have to worry and hold it in place all day.

Little rifle, little piggy and a big round…

Accuracy, as long as I did my part, was dead on and the Vortex Crossfire II 2×7 scope was perfect for both the the tighter shooting needs on a stalk through thick brush as well as longer ranges from…

Whither the Weaver Stance and the 1911 Heavy-Duty Self-Loading Pistol at Gunsite?

There’s no, one stance fits all. With semi-auto pistol, I like a Modified Weaver stance. With the service revolver, we were trained in turret stance.
In shooting event #1, I used the sitting behind the steering wheel stance. In shooting event #2, I used (a)perp #1, (b) perp #2, the Wild Bill Hickok draw from the holster and fire, (c) perp #3, kneel behind cover stance. In shooting event #3, that was in darkness, looking at motion of dark figures/shadows, fired from turret stance.
Nothing in life is perfect. Get a strong foundation, then build up, from there. Different events could have different sets of variable factors. The one thing I have noticed, is that I never thought about, what stance. I do not recall ever seeing the sights. Practice is important, so that instinctively, the shooter can employ whatever the situation requires, in stance, and shooting, without ever hesitating to think about it. You just know, and do it. That is why, you train the way you fight, and fight the way you train. Try to keep it simple, and quick paced.

Gun Culture 2.0

In my last post I gave a broad overview of the similarities and differences in the Modern Technique of the Pistol at Gunsite then and now. Here I want to continue that line of thinking by considering the status of the Weaver Stance and the Heavy-duty Self-Loading Pistol, two major elements of the Modern Technique that have changed some over the years.

Looking at what is taught in the classroom and on the range explicitly gives a good sense of how the heavy-duty pistol and the Weaver stance are handled at Gunsite today.

Gunsite 40th Anniversary Colt 1911 pistol, from http://www.gunsitestore.com

In the opening lecture of the 250 Defensive Pistol course, Rangemaster Bill Halvorsen – who has taught at Gunsite nearly 30 years, since 1988 – explains that the overall objective of the course is “to ensure you become well-grounded in the Modern Technique of the Pistol.”

He elaborates…

REPORT: National Reciprocity Bill Has TROJAN HORSE Gun Control Provision

Socialism is not the Answer

The Federalist Papers

According to Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), the Concealed Carry Reciprocity bill currently working its way through Congress will include a trojan horse, added by Democrats, that could make it more difficult for Americans to obtain guns.

Protecting your Second Amendment rights

All well and good but.., states like new York and California, the “Refuse to Issue” states, will need to be “tuned up”, and made “Shall Issue”, states.
CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY, IS, THE ANSWER.

Freedom Is Just Another Word...

Protecting your Second Amendment rights
Dear Friend, Preserving and protecting the constitutional rights of men and women in our district has been one of my top priorities since entering Congress—including your Second Amendment rights. The House of Representatives is expected to vote very soon on the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, H.R. 38, of which I’m a cosponsor.

You should know that this bill takes a big step forward in protecting your Second Amendment rights by modifying the federal laws surrounding concealed carry permits. The bill would allow law-abiding citizens who hold a concealed carry permit in their state of residence to legally travel to another state while carrying a concealed firearm for lawful purposes, and of course while complying with the particular gun laws of each state they are visiting such as gun-free zones.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act establishes equal access and the right to self-defense for all Americans…
