We have all read articles along these lines for years. Round nose bullets at moderate velocities busting thru brush better than spritzer shaped bullets would do. Is there any truth in this or is it just a myth?
Many years ago I got interested in this and decided to do some experimenting. I bought some of the archery deer targets that were very popular at that time. They were full color prints of actual deer printed on heavy paper. They weren’t life size, but plenty big enough for my purpose. I took these out into the woods and tacked them to trees. Next I would back up and get some brush in the way and try a shot at my deer target.

I assembled two AR-15s this past week. One had been sitting in my gun safe in pieces for quite some time. I think I bought it in 2012. The second, I picked up at the Albuquerque Gun Show a week or so ago.
I will post photos at some point.
The first AR was easy to assemble, until I put the take down pin in from the wrong side. Then, I had to screw around with a dental pick to push the detent and spring back to remove the pin. It set me back 45 minutes or so. Otherwise, it went together without incident.
The second AR was challenging, as the trigger would not fit under the selector switch, no matter what I did. I have no idea why. I ended up taking the grip and the selector out, putting the trigger and hammer in, then I put the selector…

Of the scores of rifles that I have owned in the past 50 years, one stands out, and it was a k98 carbine in 8x57mm, vint 1943. I had the ladder sight removed from the barrel, along with the upper handguard which rattled and shook, and I had a Lyman aperture receiver sight mounted. It was the only rifle I owned where once I took it out, usually on the afternoon side, thirty minutes later, I would be field dressing a deer. The flood of 2012, destroyed it. Of the things I did to that rifle, was full bedding with Brownell’s bedding epoxy with steel dust mixed in. I ripped the stock base good, to let the epoxy get a real good bite. The bluing job, from 1943, was in decent condition, so I left it alone. The muzzle I had recrowned. Chamber throated and polished. Action honed. The k98 was ugly as sin, and I worked on that, with 180 grit paper, which gave a “Man’s grip”. Real positive grip. Then I pine tar finished the stock with a propane torch, using a mix of pine tar/Boiled Linseed Oil/Turpentine. I mixed it up and then, started heating up the stock gently by moving the torch. The mix, soaked right in. I was going to stop at two coats but kept going until the wood stopped absorbing. I allowed the stock to dry over the month of June. Then I looked at it. I had made stocks from blanks before, and was going to polish the stock slick with Brownell’s 555 Polishing Compound, as was my norm but, that stock had a feel to it that no other rifle has ever come close to, so I left it alone, and hunted with it, despite many comments of others who said that I should polyurethane it, like theirs. I hunted snow, rain, 40 mph winds, you name it, whatever nature dished out. Hogs were in fear of that rifle and must have packed their bags, because of the decimation of their population and my freezer, a six footer, was full.
I came across this video link I am posting, The guy knows what he is talking about. I have been watching his videos, and he is pretty much on the money about everything he covers. Only one thing he said that I tried to look for his contact information but it was not listed. His M37 in winter. He warms it up and it takes a few miles to warm the transmission. Well, maybe if it’s an automatic transmission. The M37, should have a manual gearbox and a manual transfer case. What I always do with that combination is to start the engine normally, then place the transfer case in neutral, and put the main gearbox into a high gear, such as fourth gear of a five speed box. Then let things come up to normal operating temperatures. You get heat, and that means the transmission is warmed up. Take the main box out of gear, put the transfer case into two wheel high, then drive normally. I dislike automatic transmissions and electronic transfer cases. Unfortunately, my King Ranch, has both. Wish they were manual units. Anyway, enjoy the pin tar video the man made. He just became one of my favorite people.
Get all rags, wipers,used with linseed oil, out of the house and unfolded. Soak in water. Better yet, if able to do safely, burn the cloth or if left discarded it will smolder on its own. I found out the hard way as a teen and almost started a fire inside the house as rags smoldered.
Into the mix of BLO/Turp, I added some dye. I had one old rifle finished in pine tar. Ugly as sin, and really a fabulous stock in miserable weather.

With deer season at its end, it’s time to look to winter projects. Since your rifle won’t be needed, you might consider putting a little work into it, treating yourself to an oil finished stock. More durable than most factory stains, the nicks and scratches you inevitably pick up in the woods will be less noticeable, keeping your rifle all the more attractive. And having done it yourself, the rifle will become all the more yours, a part of you, and not just something you picked up off a rack. It’s well within the capabilities of most people. It’s a fun project to pass the winter months.
The right rifle for this is something common, used, and perhaps even a little damaged. While it’s fine for something with some sentimental value, you don’t want to do it to anything with any real collector value. I have an old Marlin 30AS…

Depending on the rifle, caliber, shooter, and conditions, which all play into any sight usage. The tang sight became popular of the Creedmoor rifles in the Ireland vs. America, long distance rifle matches at Creedmoor Meadows (today, the grounds of Creedmoor Psychiatric Facility, Queens, NY). Tang sight were also the staple of the buffalo trade hunters. I never cared much for tang sights, or the ladder sights. I like aperture receiver sights, or, the open buckhorn sights. Longest shot I ever took (660 meters/720 yards) was with a leupold Vari-X II scope in 4×12 power, resulting in a one shot stop, of a buck. Today, hunting is usually with 100 yards, like between 70 yards to 85 yards. Age and vision.

I have been an avid highpower rifle hunter for many years. I started reloading my own bullets nearly twenty years ago for accuracy and to make sure I had dependable performance that I could control. The green Sierra bullet boxes soon began taking up most of my shelf space on my reloading bench.
The chances of pulling a bull elk tag in South Dakota are very low, but increase with each year you gain a preference point in a failed draw attempt. I hit the jackpot in 2016 as my fourteen years of preference finally tilted the odds in my favor. There are numerous issues involved with an Article-V. Once the Constitution is opened, there is no government, and there are no laws, not federal, state, or local, as nothing exists. Owning firearms differs from carrying and/or utilizing firearms for either sporting or defensive purposes. It all leads up to this, anything short of, Constitutional Carry & Stand Your Ground, unified as one law and made the Law-of-the-Land, is a complete and total farce. The argument of keeping firearms out of the wrong hands, is half-baked, as there are numerous states that do, in fact, have Constitutional Carry. Those states all, have prisons, so we know there is some degree of crime, but we do not hear of mass murder in those states, so something, is, working. Meanwhile, states such as New York, has a laundry list of gun laws and none are any good, typical of gun laws, but not correcting human behaviors where savages are rewarded. The SAFE Act 2012, of Governor Andrew Cuomo, was eeled up in thirty minutes by, Marxists, and Republicans went along with that treason. Two who helped design that law, Dean Skelos, and Shelly Silver, both were convicted of other crimes and serving time in prison. But then again, George Soros is protected by the governor, as numerous international warrants are in force against that person. If we look at New York City, which has the Sullivan Act of 1911, everyone can see what rubbish it is, because many people have been murdered and killed (there is a difference) since 1911. Plain and simple: Gun laws, do NOT work.
